Summer fruit picking & plandid photos
There’s something so grounding about spending a summer morning with your hands in the blueberry bushes, sun filtering through the leaves, the birds singing around you. This week, I had the chance to slow down and do just that at Herndon Hills Farm in Durham—a tucked-away gem that feels like stepping into a summer postcard.
The farm is just a short drive from Raleigh, but once you pull into the gravel lot and grab your bucket, it’s all birdsong, berry rows, and peaceful quiet - perfect for family fun or a cute little date. It’s a little escape from the pace of the week, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to capture it.
A quick photo tip before you start picking:
If you want some cute, casual photos of your time out there—especially if you’re with your kids, your partner, or your favorite picking buddy—take those photos right when you arrive. The light is soft, your clothes are still clean, and most importantly, you’re not sweaty yet!
I always recommend what I call a “plandid”—a planned candid. Think: standing by the rows with your bucket in hand, gently reaching for a berry, or smiling off toward the trees. Keep your body relaxed and avoid big gestures. Instead of posing stiffly, just take a deep breath, soften your face, and let your natural expression come through. Let the setting work for you. It’s rustic, organic, and already beautiful—no forced smiles needed.
And if you’re with someone who doesn’t want to pose for photos - shoot for actual candids and capture them while they experience the fun!
Notice how cell phone photos struggle to hold up when blown up to a bigger size?! Rookie mistake, I didn’t bring my camera with me!!
