Bald Eagles & Osprey along the Cape Fear River

The North Carolina birding world learned some very exciting news this past week - a Brown Booby was seen along the Cape Fear River. The Brown Booby is a tropical seabird and it’s presence was welcomed with open arms! It seems after just three days, the Brown Booby has taken for warmer weather - I missed my chance to see it but was able to see another amazing sight on the Cape Fear River.

First, I was welcomed by a hungry Osprey that was hunting in the water just in front of me.

Ospreys hunt fish almost exclusively. They perch or fly over the water and dive down to grab them before flying off to eat them elsewhere.

The unfortunate reality is that once an Osprey obtains a fish - it could be stolen just as easily. And I hate to says, that’s what happened next.

This adult Bald Eagle flew in and began chasing the Osprey, trying to steal his fish.

This went on for about two minutes max - and even a Peregrine Falcon (admittedly blurry) flew in for some action

The Bald Eagle won this round. I can only hope the osprey was able to quickly find another fish and enjoy his breakfast in peace.

I had the most wonderful morning - even if the Brown Booby alluded me.

I hope you can make some time to be out in nature this weekend. Take a moment to look around and experience the world around you - you never know what unbelievable scene might be waiting for you.
